Many, many years ago, a generous benefactor left the Gulfport Historical Society a $10,000 endowment. Former boards chose to let the investments ride, and recently the current board benefitted from their foresight: We made some changes to the museum; the dividends over the years allowed us to start a gift shop and Florida bookstore, add storage facilities for our vast research materials (previously stacked in the back room), and update museum operations.
We still have the principal plus annual growth set aside, but we hope to keep that money in reserves in case of an emergency. We do not want to exist off the investment and the board continues to look for ways to bring in revenue.
